CEO Blog Interview: Marissa McKinney

Hey Loves! My name is Marissa McKinney and I am the Founder/Owner of Heavenly Helping Hands United and the Owner of Rissa’s Hair Closet. I am a single 32-year-old mother of 2 and I am a born and raised Georgia Peach! Though I grew up in a loving, Christian home, I faced quite a few challenges in my home life as well as my school life that caused me to deal with low confidence, self-esteem and anger issues. I made a lot of wrong decisions but I always held on to my faith in God. Through that faith, after a dark time in my life, I was able to gain understanding of where my behaviors and outlooks on certain things stemmed from and I was then able to begin the healing process. Amid that process, I was given the vision for my businesses because I wanted to help others do the same and here we are today!

- Why did you decide to become an entrepreneur?

I have always had an independent spirit and I always knew that I wanted more. I finally figured out what that more was when I moved to Charlotte in 2012. Something birthed in me to have my own hair salon, though I hadn’t been to cosmetology school at the time. From there, I continued to feed my desire and the rest is history. I can say that I never imagined that it would be what it is today at that time.

- What do you wish you knew before you started your business?

I wish I knew that people are more genuine than what I believed them to be. I struggled and did a lot on my own in the beginning out of pride and fear of rejection. Just remember this: “Ask and it shall be given, seek and ye shall find, knock and the door will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8)

- What did you learn from your biggest failure?

I learned to trust the process and to always be prepared.

- What advice would you give an aspiring entrepreneur?

It’s an acronym and that is to P.U.S.H (Press Until Something Happens). No matter how hard it may be or how tired you may get, stay consistent, be bold, do everything with integrity, and NEVER give up on your dream!
